The Dugout Gazette, 12 October
Weekend briefing
A full weekend back after the international break, and it delivered across all four English leagues.
The Premier League returned with Manchester City making the loudest statement, winning 3-0 at Liverpool in the standout fixture of Matchweek 6. Chelsea scored five, Arsenal edged past Leeds and Brighton left Sunderland with the points. The Championship produced goals at both ends of the table, League One threw up a five-goal afternoon at Milton Keynes and a Stockport comeback, and League Two leaders Salford kept grinding out results.
All of the weekend results below are final. The only match still to be played at the time of writing is Coventry City v Newcastle United tonight, Monday 12 October, at 20:00.

Key decisions
- Liverpool 0-3 Manchester City: City won at Anfield with the game still level at the break. Erling Haaland broke it open on 65 minutes, Jeremy Doku doubled the lead three minutes later and Rayan Cherki finished it on 78. Liverpool played the closing stages with ten men. It was the clearest result of the weekend and it put City out in front on their own.
- Chelsea 5-1 Bournemouth: The biggest scoreline of Matchweek 6. Chelsea were ruthless at home and turned a tight opening into a rout, which is exactly the kind of margin that lifts a squad's confidence.
- Stockport County 3-1 Barnsley: Barnsley led through Patrick Kelly on 13 minutes and looked comfortable for an hour. Kyle Wootton scored twice on 61 and 73 before Mikael Mandron sealed it on 90, a turnaround that shows how quickly a League One game can change.
- West Ham United 1-1 Queens Park Rangers: Nicolas Madsen put QPR ahead from the penalty spot on 18. Jarrod Bowen equalised on 70, then had a 91st-minute penalty saved by QPR goalkeeper Pierce Charles. Two dropped points from a stoppage-time spot-kick is a decision managers feel for weeks.
- Arsenal 2-1 Leeds United: Arsenal got the win, but by a single goal. Leeds made them work for it, and that margin is the difference between a comfortable afternoon and one that asks questions about game management.
Table and form notes
- Premier League: Manchester City lead on 18 points after their win at Liverpool. Arsenal are second on 15 and Brighton and Hove Albion third on 13. Brentford, Everton and Chelsea sit level on 10 points each. City's form is the standout of the division. Coventry City v Newcastle United is still to be played, so the picture below the top three is not final.
- Championship: Swansea City lead on 20 points from nine matches after beating Norwich City. Middlesbrough are second on 18 after their 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and West Ham United are third on 16, held at home by QPR.
- League One: Plymouth Argyle stay top on 19 points from ten matches after a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon. The chasing pack is tight and the 0-0 between Bradford City and Leyton Orient shows how few points separate the promotion hopefuls.
- League Two: Salford City lead on 19 points from ten matches. Barnet and Crewe Alexandra are both on 18 and both won at the weekend, with Crewe's 1-0 at Swindon Town keeping their unbeaten record intact. Crawley Town and Northampton Town currently occupy the relegation places.

Fantasy desk
The Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 7 deadline is 11:00 UK time on Saturday 17 October.
The fixtures
- Saturday 17 October: Everton v Chelsea (12:30), Brentford v Liverpool (15:00), Fulham v Hull City (15:00), Manchester City v Ipswich Town (15:00), Newcastle United v Aston Villa (17:30).
- Sunday 18 October: Bournemouth v Sunderland (14:00), Brighton v Crystal Palace (14:00), Leeds United v Manchester United (14:00), Nottingham Forest v Arsenal (16:30).
- Monday 19 October: Tottenham Hotspur v Coventry City (20:00).
Captaincy
- Erling Haaland is the safest pick. He hosts Ipswich Town at home, is fit after the international break, and is the most owned player in the game at around 74%. Managers protecting rank go here.
- Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper are the higher-upside alternatives. Brighton are at home to Crystal Palace, and Gross in particular rates highly for expected points and attacking threat.
- Luka Vuskovic is the differential captaincy option for managers chasing a bigger swing.
Transfer radar
- Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer (all Chelsea) remain popular targets on form and fixtures, with Everton away next.
- Differential picks under 10% ownership worth a look: Belloumi (Hull City), Cunha (Manchester United) and Jayden Bogle (Leeds United).
Fitness checks
- Kai Havertz, Arsenal: hamstring, longer-term absence.
- Alex Scott, Bournemouth: out.
- Brian Brobbey, Sunderland: out.
- Dan Ballard, Sunderland: out.
- Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, Liverpool: ruled out of the Manchester City match.
- Ezri Konsa, Arsenal: a doubt, worth monitoring.
- Cole Palmer, Chelsea: fit to play.
- Erling Haaland: fit.
Check the official club press conferences before the 11:00 deadline. With Liverpool's forward line unsettled and Arsenal still missing Havertz, squad depth is doing a lot of the work again this week.
The FPL Second Chance League started scoring in Gameweek 6, with Premier League match tickets for the winner.
Manager's view
The weekend was a lesson in what a squad looks like after an international break.
Manchester City went to Anfield with a plan and stayed patient while the game was level, then took it apart in thirteen minutes. That is not just quality, it is preparation. Chelsea did something similar at home, turning a competitive game into a 5-1 win once the first goal went in.
At the other end of the scale, Stockport County showed the value of belief in a League One squad that does not fold at 1-0 down. Barnsley led for nearly an hour and lost 3-1. Meanwhile West Ham created a stoppage-time penalty and missed it, and QPR left with a point. Small moments, large consequences.
For managers, the pattern of the weekend is simple: the clubs who could rotate without losing shape came through best. City rotated and won at the champions' ground. Liverpool, missing Isak and Gakpo, could not find a way back into the game. Arsenal won without Havertz, but only by one. Depth was not a detail this weekend, it was the story.

Final whistle
Coventry City v Newcastle United tonight is the last piece of Matchweek 6, and it will tell us whether Newcastle can keep pace with the top three or whether Coventry can add another surprise to a weekend that already had a few.
