It was a quiet week at Premier League level, with just the one fixture under the lights on Monday night, but the Championship more than made up for it with 12 midweek matches across Tuesday and Wednesday. There were no League One or League Two games between Monday and Thursday, so both divisions are fully rested and ready for a stacked Saturday.

Key Decisions
Coventry 4-1 Newcastle: The Sky Blues win their first Premier League home game in 25 years, and they did it properly. Jack Rudoni's sixth-minute penalty, Sidiki Cherif's 48th-minute finish, and then late strikes from Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni once Sven Botman had briefly given Newcastle hope. Frank Lampard's side are up and running at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Lincoln 0-6 West Ham: Down to ten men after three minutes and nine after 23, Lincoln's night fell apart quickly. Konstantinos Mavropanos headed West Ham ahead on the stroke of half-time, with Edvin Austbø, Jarrod Bowen, Pablo and a Tomas Soucek double finishing the job. It was West Ham's biggest away win for 103 years, and Nuno Espírito Santo still found time to credit Lincoln for creating problems even with one man down. That said, things got brighter for Lincoln in the details: they now visit Millwall on Saturday.
Portsmouth 3-2 Sheffield United: Zak Swanson's stunning blast into the top corner and Adrian Segecic's tap-in had Pompey cruising at 2-0 while Sheffield United were down to ten men after Hamza Choudhury's second booking. Then Japhet Tanganga and Tom Cannon dragged the visitors level, and only Ebou Adams' 89th-minute winner off the bench settled it. Chris Wilder was furious with referee Oliver Langford afterwards, and John Mousinho admitted there were muted celebrations and plenty still to fix. Third win of the campaign for Portsmouth, and it was anything but comfortable.
Cardiff 5-1 Watford: A rout in the Welsh capital, but Cardiff remain 19th on 10 points with a newly healthy goal difference. Watford sit 22nd on 8 points with the worst goal difference in the bottom four (-11) after two goals shipped here.
Table And Form Notes
The Championship table after 10 games: Swansea lead on 23 points, with Middlesbrough (21) and West Ham (19) chasing. Birmingham, QPR and West Brom fill the play-off places on 17, and Southampton's second hard-fought 1-0 win in four days lifts them to seventh on 16. At the bottom, Derby are 23rd on 6 points after a sixth league game without a win, Preston are stuck on 4, while Burnley (8) and Watford (8) hover just above the drop.
In the Premier League, Manchester City lead on 18 points after six matches, with Arsenal on 15 and Brighton on 13. Coventry's Monday win moves them to 6 points, while Fulham (2), Bournemouth (3) and Tottenham (3) occupy the relegation places.

The Fantasy Desk
The Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 8 deadline is 17:30 on Friday 23 October. Here's where the smart money is heading.
Captaincy calls:
- Jay Dasilva (Coventry, DEF, £4.0m): form 10.0 and just 1% owned. A £4.0m defender leading the captain conversation says everything about Coventry's form and their fixture at home to Fulham.
- Antoine Semenyo (Manchester City, MID): form 10.0, with City at home to Ipswich. The safest upside play on the board.
- Matheus Cunha (Manchester United, MID, £7.9m): form 10.0 and only 6.5% owned ahead of the visit of Bournemouth.
- Rayan Cherki (Manchester City, MID): form 9.0 and the crowd's favourite at 32.7% owned.
Budget and differential picks:
- Bobby Thomas (Coventry, DEF, £4.0m): form 6.5, 8.9% owned, another Sky Blue already being snapped up.
- Carl Rushworth (Coventry, GKP, £4.5m): in-form goalkeeper at under 1% ownership.
- Brian Brobbey (Sunderland, FWD, £5.7m): form 8.5, 5.1% owned, with the away trip to Bournemouth.
- Jaidon Anthony (Brentford, MID, £5.9m): form 7.5, 0.2% owned, as Brentford host Liverpool.
- James Justin (Leeds, DEF, £4.5m) and Kristoffer Ajer (Brentford, DEF, £4.5m) round out the value defensive options.
Transfer market: the crowd is loading up on Brighton. Maxim De Cuyper (£5.1m) leads all players with a net of over 503,000 transfers in, with Pascal Groß (£6.0m) close behind. João Pedro (£7.8m, Chelsea, FWD) and Morgan Rogers (£7.9m, Chelsea, MID) are the big attacker moves, both set up for Chelsea's trip to Everton on Saturday lunchtime. Moving out: Bruno Fernandes, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexander Isak are seeing the heaviest exits.
Team news to watch: suspensions as of midweek had Axel Disasi (Crystal Palace), Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool) and Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham) serving bans, all three due back for Gameweek 8. Brighton are the walking infirmary with nine players out or doubtful, so double-check their camp before trusting Groß and De Cuyper. Gravenberch's situation is especially worth monitoring ahead of Brentford vs Liverpool.
The Manager's View
If this midweek taught us anything, it's that momentum is fragile and discipline matters. Lincoln went from competitive to conceding six in the space of twenty minutes. Sheffield United turned a two-goal deficit into a late collapse because a red card changed everything, and Portsmouth nearly threw the game back. In our game you'd be weighing the substitution, the formation shift and the half-time team talk, all before the board notices. That's exactly the stuff The Dugout lives on.
Final Whistle
Keep an eye on Coventry's trip to Spurs on Monday night: a statement away win there would really turn heads, and Dasilva, Thomas and Rushworth owners will be watching every minute. At the other end of the Championship, Derby's six-game winless run meets Stoke on Saturday, and it feels like a pressure point for John Eustace's side already.
